My Favorite Play Dough Recipe

by Julie on January 5th, 2008

bucket-o-dough.jpgI do not buy play dough at the store. Store bought play dough seems to dry up too quickly and most of it just smells bad. I have been making play dough from scratch for years and not only does it last forever, but I add different extracts so that it smells good. My kids love helping me make the play dough and they also love playing with it. It’s just a really fun family activity.

Here is the recipe that I use: (I have tried others and this is number one in my book!)

1 cup flour
1 cup water
1 Tbsp. veg. oil
1 Tbsp. cream of tartar
1/4 cup of salt
a few drops of desired food coloring
1 tsp. extracts for smell: peppermint, vanilla, coconut, etc

Mix all ingredients in saucepan and cook over medium heat. Stir until ingredients are completely mixed and dough is forming and not sticking to the pan (important step!). Take dough out of pan and knead on the counter or cutting board until it’s nice and smooth. The dough is very hot so be careful!

My kids have had hours of fun with this play dough. We usually make some red play dough with peppermint extract at Christmastime. It gives them a fun project to do while they are out of school and it smells like Christmas. :)

Alright, go make some homemade play dough. Your kids will LOVE it!! :)

This sounds like a easy recipe. I plan to use it with teens this Spring. I love the flavors idea.

With the scenting do your children try to eat the playdough? That is my biggest thing with playdough (actually not my biggest- the dry pieces of it stuck everywhere and all of the colors meshed together are right up there on the top of my list). I know the dough is not toxic, I just don’t want them eating the dough. They already do it as is, so I worry that they would do it even more if it smelled/tasted good.
